Old Computers Sucked

Is 1995 the Last Time I Install Debian?

Thumbnail for the Debian episode

Overview of the Linux landscape in 1995, followed by me installing Debian 0.93R5 on my computer, which I then upgrade to Debian 0.93R6. I also talk about the a.out to ELF migration, as well as the beginning of Linux distributions that can be upgraded, rather than requiring a re-install.

I show the installation process, followed by a kernel recompile to get my hardware working, after which I can install the rest of the system off CD-ROM. I spend some time getting working sound and X Windows set up. I also give Wine a go, with seemingly some regressions from last year.
