Old Computers Sucked

Computer Networking and the Internet

Thumbnail for the network episode

In the first part of the video, I go over the different types of networking technologies in use in 1994, as well as how the internet was starting to enter public aweness.

Afterwards, I upgrade my computer to Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and set up a small peer-to-peer network with another computer. With that, I demo file and printer sharing, as well as Microsoft Mail and multiplayer Doom. I also demo the network transparency of X Windows, as well as accessing files off a Windows share on Linux.

Finally, I connect a 14.4 kbps modem and demo Netscape, the web browser. Both for browsing the web, and for using as an FTP client. I show this both on Windows and on Linux.
