Old Computers Sucked
1992 - Using Linux
This episode builds on the episode in which I installed Linux, and is more focused on using the system. As you'd expect, I also end up re-compiling my kernel a few times.
Sound Drivers
The Linux kernel at this point had no sound drivers, or sound system in general. Showcased in this video is Hannu Savolainen's sndkit version 0.2, which I build, install, and test.
Document Writing
I get roff set up and working, after which I write something that I then get printed out on my 9-pin dot matrix printer. I also compare the quality of the draft and high quality modes of ghostscript.
Dialing Into a BBS
I finish off the video by dialing into the BBS I showcased in the previous video. I use Seyon under X Windows to dial into the BBS with my 2400 baud modem.
Downloads
If you're curious about the software I installed, I've provided links to the packages here.
sndkit: kernel driver, client software, data pack.
Seyon: Seyon.
